Journal Entry #3

1. Why does understanding the context of a work of art add to our understanding of it?
→ I think it allows you to be able to pick the artists mind. and you can see more clearly of what he or she was getting at.

2. In what ways does the written word add to the public's experience of art?
→ Written words seem to be more dramatic to me. It gives it a stronger appearance and very straight forward.

  1. Elizabeth,

Context reflects the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea and which it can be fully understood and assessed.
when viewing art, the contextual perspective broadens our appreciation for the work as part of a social whole.

The public’s experience of art is mediated by the written word. A work of art is always encountered in a social/cultural context which implies a historical consciousness. The written word which comes before, after and sometimes during the public’s experience of art give it meaning through the network of associations it may suggest.
